3v3 Basketball Rules

3v3 Basketball Rules/Regulations

SARC GUIDELINES:

1. The goal and purpose of the Savannah Adult Recreation Club (SARC) is to provide a fun and friendly competition in adult recreational sports.

2. Even though this is for FUN, there may be times when the sports/games get intense, but it is your own personal responsibility to never allow yourself, your teammates, or your spectators to cross the line between friendly competition and unsportsmanlike behavior.

3. Each player should treat their fellow athletes, referees, spectators, and other staff with respect and courtesy at all times.  Any profane or malicious comments directed at any of the aforementioned people will not be tolerated.

4. Poor sportsmanship are considered the following: arguing with referees, yelling at opposing players, and using profane remarks or gestures.  These are just a few.

BASKETBALL REGULATIONS:

1. Registration & Rosters

1a. All participants of the SARC 3v3 Basketball league must sign the waiver form and pay the league registration fee in order to participate.

1b. Each team shall play with 3 players on the court at one time.  The minimum required is 2.  Rosters should consist of 3-6 players, all of whom must be sign the waivers PRIOR to playing in the game.

1c. Rosters must be finalized by the last game of the season.

1d. Players can only be on one team.

1e. Shorthanded teams may play with the minimum of 2 players.  Teams with less than 2 players will be made to forfeit.  Teams can pick up no more than 2 guest players.  Teams cannot pick up more players than their opponent has.  i.e. Team A has 2 players and Team B has 3 players, then Team A can only pick up one person to match the opponents number of players.

1f. Any team using illegal players will forfeit the game.

2. Team Captain

2a. Each team should have a team captain that is responsible for registering the team, but individuals are responsible for paying.

2b. The team captain needs to attend "coin toss" at beginning of game and is the ONLY personal that is allowed to speak to the referees during the course of the game about calls, fouls, etc.  The team captain is expected to address the referees and staff in a respectful manner that follows the SARC guidelines.

2c.  The team captain shall serve as the "liaison" between SARC and their team, and is expected to attend captains meetings, and notify teammates of cancellations, changes, rules, policies, etc.

3. Equipment

3a. Shorts/pants must be worn.  It is highly suggested that the shorts/pants do not have pockets, belt loops, belts, etc as a method to reduce injury.

3b.  Closed-toe shoes must be worn: sneakers or tennis/basketball shoes acceptable.

3c. Teams are encouraged to wear team jerseys, however, teams must at least wear the same color shirts if jerseys are not worn.  Pinnies will be provided in the event that two teams wear the same color shirts.

3d. SARC will provide a game ball, but teams are permitted to use their own ball as long as it is size appropriate, and both teams agree.

4. PLAYING COURT

4a. The court is 22 yards long and 16 yards wide.  The court has lines marking the out of bounds, the 3 point line, the free throw line, and the lane.

4b. The line is OUT.  If any part of your foot or the ball hit the line, it is a turnover.

5. Officials/Referees

5a. SARC will provide 1 referee for each game.

5b. Teams will be required to send a scorekeeper to either the prior or later game to that which they play their game as the “home team” on the schedule.  Each team will have 3 home games.

5c. Any team that fails to show up for scorekeeping duty will lose 25 points to their score that week...or they can buy those points back for $20.

6. Game Policies

6a. Coin toss at pregame will determine who gets to defend what side.   The game will start with a jump ball, and the winner of the jump ball is considered to have “first possession”. The second half will begin with the other team getting the ball and both teams switching sides.  Any situation deemed “jump ball” by the referee, will rotate possession amongst the teams.

6b. The game will consist of (2) 20-minute halves.  There will be a running clock except for the timeouts.

6c. Teams will have 4 one-minute timeouts per game.  You can only use 3 timeouts in the 2nd half.

6d. If a team calls timeout, the clock will restart once the ball is touched in bounds.

6e. There is no mercy rule.  Point differential helps to distinguish seedings.

6f. A game is considered "official" when it reaches halftime. If game terminated due to weather after halftime, then it counts.  If game doesn't reach halftime, then it will be replayed from beginning.

6g. Teams are expected to be at the court ready to play at the time the game is supposed to start…a 10-minute window will be allowed, but otherwise a forfeit will take place.

6h.  If after regulation, teams will play a 2-minute overtime to try and decide a winner.  If teams are tied after OT, then game ends in a tie.

GENERAL RULES:

7a. Normal rules and penalties of the NCAA apply unless exceptions have been made herein.

7b. Shots inside the 3-point arc are worth 2 points, any shot taken outside the 3-point arc is worth 3 points.  Free throws after a foul are worth 1 point. (Female baskets area all worth 1 extra).

7c. SLOW PLAY: There will be no shot clock.  However, it is a violation to “stall” or attempt to “freeze” the ball during play.  Teams are expected to develop their own pace of play and maintain this throughout the contest.  Holding the ball or stalling will result in a turnover to the opposition.

7d. Teams will be allowed 5 fouls per half before 1&1 free throws , and 10 fouls per game before 1&1 free throws.

7e. Fouls are to the Referees discretion and will allow players to play to ensure a fun fast paced game.

VIOLATIONS:

8a. Walking/Traveling: Taking more than 'a step and a half' without dribbling the ball is traveling. Moving your pivot foot once you've stopped dribbling is traveling.

8b. Carrying/palming: When a player dribbles the ball with his hand too far to the side of or, sometimes, even under the ball.

8c. Double Dribble: Dribbling the ball with both hands on the ball at the same time or picking up the dribble and then dribbling again is a double dribble.

8d. Held ball: Occasionally, two or more opposing players will gain possession of the ball at the same time. In order to avoid a prolonged and/or violent tussle, the referee stops the action and awards possession to one team or the other on a rotating basis.

8e. Goaltending: If a defensive player interferes with a shot while it's on the way down toward the basket, while it's on the way up toward the basket after having touched the backboard, or while it's in the cylinder above the rim, it's goaltending and the shot counts. If committed by an offensive player, it's a violation and the ball is awarded to the opposing team for a throw-in.

8f. Backcourt violation: Once the offense has brought the ball across the mid-court line, they cannot go back across the line during possession. If they do, the ball is awarded to the other team to pass inbounds.

8g. Inbounds Pass: A player passing the ball inbounds has five seconds to pass the ball. If he does not, then the ball is awarded to the other team.

8h. 3 Seconds in the Key: No offensive or defensive player can hang out in the key for more than 3 seconds at a time.

8i. Holding the ball: a player cannot have the ball for more than five seconds when being closely guarded.

FOULS:

9a. Personal fouls: Personal fouls include any type of the following illegal physical contacts:

Hitting, Pushing, Slapping, Holding, Illegal pick/screen

9b. Shooting foul: If a player is fouled while shooting, then gets either 2 or 3 free throws if shot doesn't go in (based on the location of the shot), but only 1 free throw if shot does go in.

9c. Non-shooting foul:  If fouled while not shooting, the ball is given to the team the foul was committed upon. They get the ball at the nearest side or baseline, out of bounds, and have 5 seconds to pass the ball onto the court.

9d. Charging: An offensive foul that is committed when a player pushes or runs over a defensive player. The ball is given to the team that the foul was committed upon.

9e. Blocking: Blocking is illegal personal contact resulting from a defender not establishing position in time to prevent an opponent's drive to the basket.

9f. Flagrant foul: Violent contact with an opponent. This includes hitting, kicking, and punching. This type of foul results in free throws plus the offense retaining possession of the ball after the free throws.

9g. Intentional foul: When a player makes physical contact with another player with no reasonable effort to steal the ball. It is a judgment call for the officials.

9h. Technical foul: Technical foul. A player or a coach can commit this type of foul. It does not involve player contact or the ball but is instead about the 'manners' of the game. Foul language, obscenity, obscene gestures, and even arguing can be considered a technical foul, as can technical details regarding filling in the scorebook improperly or dunking during warm-ups.
